In recent times there has been several unscrupulous foreign based internet sellers purporting to offer Leupold scopes for sale into the Australian market. Almost all of these internet dealers are not and never have been approved Leupold distributors (even in their country of origin) and in many cases cannot actually supply the Leupold products they are pretending to promote. Many seek to advertise the Leupold name to attract you to their website with the sole intent to sell you an alternate branded product. A practice identified as "false and misleading conduct" under the provisions of the Trade Practices Act in Australia.

Additionally, some scopes from certain internet dealers are actually cheap Chinese copies which outwardly resemble various Leupold models. Please be aware that all genuine Leupold rifles scopes and optics that carry the Leupold golden ring are manufactured in the U.S.A.

The few USA based Internet dealers that may actually be able to deliver genuine Leupold products present questionable cost savings to say the least and seek to avoid local Australian taxes to achieve a price advantage. Please be advised that the international movement of firearm optics are subject to the provisions of the International Traffic in Arms regulations (ITAR's) and are not freely able to be transferred between countries without permission of various governments. In the case of Leupold optics approval is required from both, the U.S. Commerce Department and from the Defence Export controls office in Australia. Leupold Optics imported into Australia under approvals in place with the U.S. Commerce department cannot be transhipped or permanently re-exported to any other country without approval.

Please understand that Leupold optics purchased from overseas sources are not subject to the normal Leupold Australian in-country after sales support. In the event that a product is incorrectly supplied, damaged in transit, in need of custom shop options or warranty service, it will be the responsibility of the owner to return the item to the original place of purchase. If that is overseas they will need to ensure complete compliance with the ITAR's provisions affecting rifle optics to avoid product confiscation or personal prosecution.

Alternatively, the costs and processes involved in Australian warranty, customer service, Australian government compliance and ITARS compliance issues for goods imported and distributed through the Leupold approved distribution network in Australia is carried by Nioa. It is a requirement that all items covered by the ITARs provisions are exported and controlled through a proven and vetted distribution network. Hence Leupold is bound to support and enforce controlled international distribution as part of its legal compliance obligations.

Many of these Internet sites are fly-by-night operations that constantly change postal address and website names in order to keep ahead of the authorities. Please ensure you do not inadvertently support unscrupulous internet dealers that may seek to avoid the legal provisions of the ITAR regulations.
